Proposal in the TRNC: Free-Chip Casinos Inside Restaurants

A new and unconventional idea is being floated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC): allowing casinos to operate inside large restaurants, with gambling chips handed out for free.

Planned changes to the TRNC’s Gambling Law — which would allow TRNC citizens to legally enter casinos — have triggered an unexpected proposal from the restaurant industry. According to Kibris Postasi, the Restaurant Owners Association (Res-Bir) has suggested that casino licenses be granted to restaurants based on their seating capacity. The initiative has received strong support from across the sector.

Restaurant owners say the goal isn’t to make a profit from gambling. Instead, they claim the idea is to provide light-hearted entertainment, with customers only paying for the food they order — not for the games.

“Many restaurant operators have joined our campaign and support our idea,” Res-Bir said in a statement. “We’re asking to be allowed casino licenses too. We promise that no one will lose money gambling anymore — because the chips will be given out for free.”

Industry representatives argue that this approach could be both entertaining and socially responsible.

“This could be a new and innovative way to entertain people while also contributing to the well-being of society,” the statement continues. “We call on the government once again: if citizens are allowed to enter casinos, that right shouldn’t be reserved only for major corporate groups. It should be extended to everyday workers as well.”

“In these difficult times, we want to lift people’s spirits and offer a responsible form of fun. With this idea, we’re hoping to start something fresh and make a meaningful contribution to society — blending joy and responsibility.”
