Investigation Underway in TRNC After Pensioner's Death Due to Medical Error
An investigation is being conducted in Northern Cyprus regarding the death of a patient at one of the hospitals in Nicosia. The pensioner passed away due to a fatal medical error during a blood transfusion.
According to the "Yeniduzen" publication, a 56-year-old retired teacher from Nicosia named Ayla Dalgalan was undergoing treatment for sickle cell anemia at the Thalassemia Center of the State Hospital in Nicosia. Preliminary data suggests that during the treatment, the patient received incompatible blood during the transfusion.
According to the deceased woman's daughter, her mother's health deteriorated sharply during the course of treatment. Complications arose upon repeated blood sampling. Despite the patient's complaints, the nurse did not pay attention to them.
After discharge, the woman's condition worsened further. When she was urgently taken to the emergency department, it was found that she had been given the wrong blood type. Consequently, the former teacher was hospitalized in the internal medicine department, where she began receiving corticosteroid therapy. Later, the family transferred the patient to the Near East University Hospital.
Relatives claim that treatment started too late, and due to complications that arose on May 10, the woman passed away.
Additionally, according to the police, blood, and tissue samples were taken to determine the cause of death of 56-year-old Ayla Dalgalan, who passed away in the intensive care unit of the NEU Hospital in Nicosia.
The final cause of death will be determined after receiving the results of the examination. The police investigation is ongoing.
