In the TRNC, a map of earthquake-prone areas will be created
In the TRNC, a map of earthquake-prone areas will be created by listing active fault lines across the country. The cooperation protocol for earthquake research has been signed between the Department of Geology and Mining at the Deputy Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, and the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey.
The document was signed by the Vice Prime Minister, Director of the Department of Geology and Mining at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment, Ayşen Albayrak, and the project coordinator of the General Directorate of Mining and Geological Exploration at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Hasan Elmacı.
Within the framework of this collaboration, research will begin to map active fault lines across the country and determine historical earthquakes and recurrence intervals of underground shocks.
In total, 9 trench paleoseismological studies have already been conducted, and by the end of the project, 16 trenches are planned to be opened.
The project aims to identify seismic hazards in the TRNC, which, due to its geological structure, is located in a tectonically active region.
Maps formed with the new data will be shared with all relevant parties. This is expected to be the first step towards creating earthquake-resistant buildings and cities.
