Increase in Mental Illness Cases in Northern Cyprus
There has been a significant rise in the number of mental illness cases and patients struggling with drug addiction in Northern Cyprus. The serious mental health issues have been largely attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing economic crisis.
Dr. Mehmet Çakıcı, the chief physician at the psychiatric hospital "Pembe Köşk," discussed this alarming trend during the program Sabah Postası on Kıbrıs Postası.
According to Dr. Çakıcı, the rise in mental illness, drug addiction, and alcoholism is causing widespread concern throughout the community.
"The effects of the pandemic and the economic crisis have led many people to experience heightened anxiety and depression. As a result, alcohol and drugs have become the primary means of self-medication. We are now facing more severe psychiatric cases than ever before," Dr. Çakıcı explained.
With the increase in drug and alcohol dependency, there has also been a surge in mental health disorders linked to substance abuse. In some instances, patients have posed a threat both to themselves and others. These individuals may require hospitalization in secure facilities under police supervision. Several incidents have been tied to serious mental disorders, particularly psychosis.
"The burden on mental health professionals is immense. It is critical that both psychologists and psychiatrists work together to address these growing challenges," emphasized Dr. Çakıcı.
The doctor also underscored the importance of long-term rehabilitation programs provided by the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment and Research Center (AMATEM).
