TRNC authorities have set a maximum price for bread: bakers are unhappy
TRNC authorities are trying to curb the rise in bread prices: the country has set a maximum allowable price. However, producers are unhappy with this decision: in many stores, the cost of bread remains higher than the maximum.
According to the decision published in the "Official Gazette," the maximum selling price of bread in the country's stores should be 12 Turkish lira. However, some retail outlets continue to sell bread for 15 lira.
As reported by Kibris Postasi, residents of Gönyeli and Alayköy complained about the price increases to the News Cyprus news center.
Citizens who have noticed this situation stated that the non-compliance with the rules of the official bulletin, which determines prices, violates consumer rights.
The statement suggests increasing the number of checks on retail outlets to ensure compliance with the law.
At the same time, it is reported that TRNC bread producers have stated that "establishing a maximum selling price for bread in accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers does not comply with competition law norms."
The joint statement was joined by bakeries "Çınar", "Karapaz", "Çıralı", "Lala", "Dano", "Narin", "Ekmektar", "Naz Kan", "Ekor", "Özdemir", "Elite", "Tunaş", "Göçmenköy Shah", and "Ustam".
"In the context of the 'Competition Law of Bread and Bakery Products,' each bread factory has calculated its costs and offered our population the most affordable prices today. Establishing a maximum selling price for bread in accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers does not comply with antimonopoly legislation norms," say the bakers in a statement made on behalf of Güzelyurt Göçmen Bakery, Yeni Erenköy Bakery, and Kardeşler Ekmek Bakery.
Recall that it was previously reported that bread prices will increase in Northern Cyprus from February 1st.
