A businessman from Northern Cyprus detained in France at the request of Greek Cypriot authorities
Behdad Jafari, a businessman and citizen of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, was detained in France at the request of Greek Cypriot authorities. The incident occurred at Nice Airport, where French police stopped him for questioning. Sources indicate that the detention is related to a complaint by the Greek Cypriot side accusing Jafari of violating property rights.
According to available information, the Greek Cypriot side claims that the complaint is based on allegations of unauthorized use of Greek goods found in Northern Cyprus. French authorities acted on the basis of an international request submitted under mutual legal assistance procedures in criminal matters.
The entrepreneur’s family issued an official statement emphasizing that Behdad Jafari has conducted lawful business activities in Northern Cyprus for many years and is not involved in any illegal activities. Relatives called the detention “unjustified and politically motivated” and demanded his immediate release. They also urged French authorities to ensure a fair trial and not yield to political pressure.
The incident caused widespread public resonance and once again highlighted unresolved property disputes between the northern and southern parts of Cyprus. The case recalled the ongoing conflict over property left after the division of the island and raised concerns in the Northern Cyprus business community.
Jafari’s family expressed deep concern, noting that the allegations undermine his reputation and create an unfavorable environment for business activities. Northern Cyprus authorities, according to local sources, are considering filing an official protest with the French side and requesting the businessman’s release.
