Supreme Court Releases Turkish Citizen Held in Custody for 11 Months
The Supreme Court of the Republic of Cyprus has ordered the release of a Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin who had been held in custody since March 2025.
According to Haravgi, the court concluded that continued detention was excessive, unjustified, and legally impermissible. The ruling notes that the man had spent about 11 months in custody, while there are no realistic prospects for his immediate deportation in the foreseeable future.
The court also pointed out that his previous application for international protection had been rejected; however, the applicant has filed an appeal with the International Administrative Court for Protection Matters.
It was further emphasized that a person’s refusal to voluntarily consent to deportation cannot serve as grounds for continued deprivation of liberty. In this regard, the court ordered his immediate release.
