Residents of the TRNC Complain About Rotten Tomatoes Priced at 100 TL

Residents of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are increasingly concerned about rising food prices, especially considering the often poor quality of the products. The latest issue troubling consumers is the high price of tomatoes, which can reach up to 100 Turkish lira in Northern Cyprus.

According to the Kibris Postasi newspaper, buyers are outraged by the cost of tomatoes, which range from 85 to 100 TL per kilogram in stores and markets. Worse yet, many of these tomatoes are already spoiled. In contrast, higher-quality tomatoes in Turkey cost significantly less, between 25 and 35 TL per kilogram. Meanwhile, in the Republic of Cyprus, tomatoes can be purchased for around 1 euro (approximately 36-37 TL).

"The price difference is causing consumers in the north to question why they have to pay such high prices," the newspaper reports.

Additionally, it is noted that instead of purchasing low-quality tomatoes in the northern part of the island, citizens who have the opportunity continue to buy cheaper and better-quality tomatoes in the Republic of Cyprus.

Earlier, it was reported that the TRNC's Statistical Institute announced the inflation rate in the country. In July, inflation was 3.51%; from January to July, it was 37.65%, and compared to the same month of the previous year, prices have increased by 72.51%.
