Residents of TRNC Shocked by Electricity Bills: Kıb-Tek to Disconnect Debtors Tomorrow
The Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK) has sent out electricity bills for June 2024, shocking TRNC residents with the price hike. Meanwhile, the utility company plans to disconnect power to debtors as soon as tomorrow.
According to local residents, June electricity bills were significantly higher than in previous months. Consumers are sharing their bills on social media, with many expressing outrage over the sudden increase in utility costs.
- “It feels like we're running a factory, not living in an apartment,” one resident complained.
- “How can a bill of 5,000 liras come to a 1+1 apartment without air conditioning?” another consumer questioned.
- “There are two of us, and no one is home during the day. How did we get a bill of 3,200 TL?” wondered another homeowner.
Previously, there were reports about KIB-TEK planning to increase electricity costs in Northern Cyprus by another 13%. This was stated by the president of the Cyprus and Turkey Electricity Authority Workers' Union (El-Sen) on Kibrıs Postasi TV. However, the utility company later denied the price hike. Despite this, June bills turned out to be significantly higher than the previous month.
Additionally, the Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK) announced that starting Thursday, July 4, it would disconnect electricity for customers with debts exceeding 675 Turkish liras.
The announcement also stated that on the same day, electricity would be cut off for customers with unpaid installment debts under legally binding contracts with the authority.
