About the University
Girne American University was founded in 1985 by Serhat Akpinar as a higher education institution modeled after the American system. It is part of YÖDAK, the Higher Education Planning, Accreditation, and Coordination Council of Northern Cyprus, and YÖK, its Turkish counterpart.
One of the university's goals is to ensure the sustainability of scientific research and conduct it in its own research centers, as well as to provide opportunities for students and researchers to carry out individual projects.
Today, the university hosts over 20,000 students from 135 different countries and has 22 research laboratories at its disposal.

The university is a member of the Caucasus University Association, which includes members from Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, South Azerbaijan, Moldova, Northern Cyprus, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the USA.
Additionally, GAU has an International Campuses Office aimed at promoting, supporting, and enhancing the educational and cultural experiences of all Girne American University students by facilitating their studies and travel abroad.
