Crossing the border to Cyprus by car
To drive in the southern part of Cyprus, you must obtain a special document (TOM, explained below) and purchase insurance, without which you will not be allowed into the Republic.
According to the rules, you can only cross the border by car if the vehicle belongs to a Turkish Cypriot, an EU citizen, or a UK citizen.
Of course, both the driver and passengers must have the right to cross the border — an open Schengen visa. A Cyprus visa is also acceptable, but only if you initially entered the island through the south.
- Important note: If you arrived in Northern Cyprus via Ercan Airport or the ports of Famagusta and Kyrenia, you may be questioned at the border — under Cypriot law, these are considered illegal entry points located in occupied territory.
Crossing the border in a rental car
Not all rental companies allow driving to the southern part of the island, but some do, and they issue a separate permit. Here’s where you can find contacts for local rental companies:
Obtaining an entry permit
The TOM document is issued only at the Metehan checkpoint in Nicosia. Present your vehicle documents and driver's license at the kiosk near the insurance company kiosks. The booth operates on weekdays from 9 AM to 1 PM.
After verifying your documents, you will be issued the TOM document. Then go and purchase the insurance. It costs 25 euros for one month.
