In Northern Cyprus, the traffic police actively monitor speed compliance using both fixed cameras and mobile radars.

Even if you have memorized all the cameras along your route, don’t relax: police units often set up ambushes at key road sections, especially where drivers tend to speed — on highways between Nicosia and Famagusta, Güzelyurt and Lefke.

How speed control and radars work

On highways and city streets, fixed speed cameras are installed, and portable mobile radars are also used by traffic police to monitor speed in real time. Ambushes are often set up in the morning and evening hours, especially on weekends.

On radar-controlled sections, you may see special warning signs, but this is not always guaranteed — some posts operate without signage.

Tip: In Northern Cyprus, it is not recommended to exceed the speed limit by more than 10 km/h — even a small violation is automatically recorded by the system.

What to do if you receive a fine

If you are stopped by the police, a fine will be issued on an official form indicating:

  • the place and time of the violation,
  • your personal details (driver’s license and passport number),
  • the exact fine amount and the date the report was issued.

You have 15 days to pay the fine. If not paid within this period, the amount doubles. After another 15 days, the case is forwarded to court.

How to pay a fine in Northern Cyprus

You can pay the fine at any police station — it does not have to be the station that issued the report. Payment is accepted in cash or by bank card (cards issued in Russia usually do not work).

It is recommended to carry cash, as some stations may experience technical issues with card transactions.

After payment, you will receive a receipt and cash slip — these must be kept until leaving the island to confirm payment at border control if necessary.

This procedure applies to all fines issued by the traffic police, including violations recorded by cameras.
