Lara Beach

Lara Beach is part of the Paphos district but is located away from the bustling tourist areas on the Akamas Peninsula. This area is covered with juniper bushes, making it an ideal place for those looking for fresh air away from city pollution.

The beach is located in a bay protected by a cape, so the waves are gentle, and the water temperature is usually a few degrees warmer than in Paphos. The entry into the sea is sandy and gradual, making it perfect for families and those seeking peace and quiet. Near the rocks of the cape, the water is particularly clear, which is ideal for snorkeling.

Infrastructure on Lara Beach

There are no hotels or accommodations on or near the beach. The nearest town with accommodation options is Peyia, which has small villas and hotels. Coral Bay, a quieter tourist area, is also nearby. If you plan to rent a car, it is recommended to stay in Paphos, as the drive to Lara Beach takes less than an hour.

However, the access road is dirt, dusty, and bumpy, which may be problematic for cars with low clearance. Additionally, there are no showers or toilets, and umbrellas are not allowed, so it is recommended to bring your own sun protection.

Turtles on Lara Beach

The beach is also known as "Turtle Beach" because it is a nesting site for turtles. Every year, from May to August, green turtles come to Lara Beach to nest. The nests are protected by the reserve staff, who cover them with wire mesh to prevent disturbance. The eggs are incubated for about seven weeks, and if you're lucky, you might witness the hatchlings heading to the sea. Female turtles return to this beach every 15-20 years to lay their eggs.

In this area, there is the Lara Bay Turtle Conservation Station, where visitors can learn more about these species and conservation efforts. The station has aquariums with turtles and informational panels. There is also a turtle museum in Inia, which we have covered separately.
