Millomeris Waterfall in Cyprus
The Millomeris Waterfall is the tallest and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Cyprus. Its height reaches 15 meters, which is two meters higher than the neighboring waterfall called Caledonia. Speaking of names, "Millomeris" translates as "wet place." There is an alternative version suggesting that its name comes from an old mill that once existed near the waterfall.
The best time to visit the waterfall is the very end of winter or the beginning of spring, when the mountain rivers have the strongest flow. Unlike many other rivers in Cyprus, Millomeris does not dry up even in summer, although its flow diminishes somewhat. Those who visit during the warmer months will also be able to enjoy the long-awaited coolness. Even when the temperature on the coast exceeds 40°C, the climate near the waterfall remains cool. However, during the peak season, be prepared to meet many tourists and even whole tour groups.
How to Find the Millomeris Waterfall
The path to the Millomeris Waterfall starts from the east side of the village of Platres. From the stone church of Faneromeni, you will need to climb about 200 meters, after which you will find a sign directing you to the waterfall. It also informs you that you are at an altitude of 1050 meters above sea level. The path to the waterfall mostly goes downhill. The trail is unpaved and equipped with handrails on steep turns for safety. There are wooden steps along the way up and down. The mountain river Krios Potamos, whose name means "cold water," crosses the trail in several places. Wooden bridges have been constructed over it. In some places, this river cascades down the rocks, creating waterfalls — one of them is the Millomeris Waterfall.
The total length of the trail is 1200 meters. Along the trail, benches and trash bins are placed every 300 meters. During the walk, not only will you be able to enjoy breathtaking views of the cascading water, but also the surrounding nature: mountain forests with pine trees, cypress trees, wildflowers, and berries. In these forests, you can spot hares, chameleons, squirrels, and golden eagles.
The walk to the waterfall will take from 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the pace and stops. The return trip will be slightly longer as it goes uphill. It’s advisable to bring drinking water and something to snack on. Also, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes: despite the trail being well-prepared, there are stones and uneven spots. In the summer, you might want to bring swimming clothes, as swimming in the cold river water will energize you after the hike.
How to Get to the Millomeris Waterfall
You will first need to reach the village of Platres, from where most of the trails to the waterfall start, as we mentioned above. There are several ways to get to the village: by car, taxi, public transport, or as part of a tour.
By Car
The trip will take 45 to 50 minutes. The road is easy, with a few hilly turns at the end. If you want to save time on the walk, you can drive almost all the way to the waterfall. In this case, from the "Millomeris Waterfalls Trail" sign, you will need to descend about 200 meters on a staircase. The parking area is small, so we recommend leaving your car on the side of the road before the sign. Near the parking, there is a small shopping area with a café, souvenir shop, and kiosks.
- You can rent a car through the aggregator Localrent starting from 10-12 euros per day.
By Bus
Public transport to the Troodos mountain area departs only from Limassol. Bus No. 64 follows the route: Limassol seafront (stop in front of Pizza Hut) — Old Limassol port — Platres village — Troodos village main square — Botanical garden. It departs daily at 09:10 from Limassol and returns at 16:15 in summer and 15:15 in winter. A round-trip ticket costs 10 euros.
With an Organized Tour
There are no separate tours exclusively to this waterfall, but it is usually included in tourist routes through the Troodos Mountains. You can inquire at tourist agencies in tourist areas whether Millomeris is included in the itinerary.
By Taxi
A private car with a driver in Cyprus is not cheap, but it has its advantages: you don’t need to follow the map and can enjoy Cypriot wine during lunch. It is recommended to order a taxi from reliable companies such as Taxi Cyprus or Max 7 Taxi. Also, here’s a list of apps for calling a taxi in Cyprus.
