September 5: 47,000 secondary school students returned to classrooms in Cyprus
On September 5, 47,000 secondary school students returned to classrooms in Cyprus, the Ministry of Education reported. For lower grades, the school year will begin on Monday, September 8.
The secondary education sector includes 108 schools; this year, 42,111 students will be enrolled. A total of 7,117 teachers have returned to work. The technical and vocational secondary education sector includes 11 units with 5,087 students and 803 teachers.
Primary education comprises 611 institutions — 329 schools and 274 kindergartens. There are 51,590 students in primary schools and 13,117 in kindergartens; 7,557 teachers work in this sector. Additionally, the island has 9 special schools and 145 special institutions for children with special educational needs.
Earlier, Education Minister Faina Michaelidou issued a statement regarding the start of the school year. Residents of Cyprus and parents are advised to check exact dates and rules on the websites and announcements of their schools, pay attention to school bus schedules and possible increased traffic in the morning and evening, and follow the safety measures established by their schools.
