The Administration of the British Bases Implemented Measures at Checkpoints Due to Suspected Foot-and-Mouth Disease
The British Bases Administration (BB) has implemented preventive measures at the official checkpoints in Pergamos and Strovilia following reports of suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Northern Cyprus.
At the request of the Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus, the BB installed disinfection facilities and suspended the passage of all animal-origin products through the specified checkpoints. The measures are aimed at reducing any potential risk and demonstrate the administration’s readiness to support its partners, according to the BB statement.
The disease has not yet been confirmed, so the actions taken are precautionary to protect animal and public health. The head of the Customs-Immigration Department in the BB areas of responsibility, Mark Hartley, emphasized that prompt and responsible measures are being implemented, and that in close cooperation with Veterinary Services, everything possible is being done to support partners and ensure safety while maintaining the smooth operation of the checkpoints.
For residents of Cyprus, this means temporary restrictions on the movement of animal-origin products through Pergamos and Strovilia and the implementation of disinfection procedures at these crossings.
