Ayia Napa Applies to Join EU Network of Carnival Cities
The Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality has submitted a joint proposal as part of a European program, aiming to include the carnivals of Ayia Napa (Karamella), Patras (Greece), and Putignano (Italy) in a collaborative cultural initiative.
According to a statement from the municipality, the proposal—called “Medicarnaval: A Mediterranean Initiative for the Exchange and Development of Carnival Arts, Rituals, Stories, and Vibrant Authentic Life”—was submitted under the 2025 Small-Scale Cooperation Projects in Culture and Creativity in Europe program.
The initiative’s goal is to create a network of carnival cities throughout the Mediterranean region. This network would encourage sharing knowledge, cross-border cultural cooperation, joint artistic projects, and the promotion of carnival culture at a European level.
Municipal officials highlighted that through this collaboration, participating cities will have the chance to boost their cultural profile across Europe, implement modern promotion and organizational tools, and develop joint strategies for managing and showcasing their unique local traditions.
