American Professor to Be Honored as Citizen of Paphos
The leading archaeologist of the island of Yeronisos in Peyia, American professor Joan Breton Connelly, will be granted honorary citizenship of Paphos. The ceremony is scheduled for June 14th at the multicultural space Attikon in Paphos.
The event will be attended by Paphos Mayor Fedonas Fedonos. Professor Connelly herself will deliver a lecture titled "The Eyes of Paphos: The Jewel of Ptolemaic Alexandria."
Archaeologist Joan Breton Connelly has been closely associated with both the city and the district of Paphos for the past 50 years. She will receive this award for her decades-long dedication to the archaeology of Paphos and the island of Yeronisos, where she has conducted vital research for the discovery and protection of antiquities in the Paphos area.
Joan Breton Connelly has been teaching at New York University (NYU) since 1986 and has conducted excavations in Greece, Kuwait, and Cyprus. Since 1990, she has led New York University's archaeological mission on Yeronisos in Peyia, overseeing interdisciplinary research in ecology, geomorphology, archaeology, and history of the island.
The scholar has authored three books and published numerous short works in research collections and scientific journals. Her works have received awards and honors from prestigious academic and research institutions in the USA, UK, and Greece.
