The Republic of Cyprus and China have signed a Memorandum of Understanding and an intergovernmental agreement aimed at enhancing air transport between the two nations. This document is intended to further liberalize flights between Cyprus and China.

The signing ceremony took place at the office of the Civil Aviation Department in Nicosia. The agreement was signed by Panayiotis Dimitriou, the Director of the Civil Aviation Department, and Han Zi, the Deputy Administrator of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

Panayiotis Dimitriou stated that this memorandum opens the door for increased air travel between the two countries, which will promote tourism and business activities.

Liu Idao, the Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, who attended the ceremony, emphasized that the agreement will foster development in tourism, economy, trade, and cooperation in the aviation sector.

The ambassador expressed his satisfaction with the successful signing of the agreement, noting that "this is a significant achievement and a positive development for Chinese-Cypriot relations."

He also highlighted that strengthening air connectivity is a common goal for the governments and peoples of both China and Cyprus.

"Thanks to this agreement, we now have a legal foundation for the future establishment of direct flights," said the ambassador.

It is important to note that on April 5, 2000, the Republic of Cyprus and the People's Republic of China initialed a bilateral air agreement and signed a protocol during a meeting. This agreement allowed for the appointment of only one airline from each country to operate flights between them, with Cypriot airlines servicing only one destination, while China could choose between Larnaca and Paphos.

The new air agreement provides for a significant increase in the number of European and Chinese airlines serving two airports of their choice in China.

"We anticipate that the first flights from China will soon land at Larnaca and Paphos airports, and this will be a great pleasure for us," stated the Director of the Civil Aviation Department of Cyprus.

Until direct flights to China commence, travelers will need to make connections; tickets can be checked on Aviasales.
