Number of Public Servants in Cyprus Approaches 55,000
According to the statistical service, the total number of public servants in Cyprus reached 54,884 in October 2024, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year.
The average number of employees from January to October 2024 stood at 54,128, representing a 3.4% (1,784 people) rise compared to the same period in 2023.
This growth is primarily attributed to changes in the Ministry of Education, which abolished its previous system of outsourcing services for support programs. This led to the direct hiring of temporary staff starting from the 2023-2024 academic year.
As of October, 12,045 people were employed in the civil service on a permanent basis, 4,199 on indefinite contracts, 1,219 on fixed-term contracts, and 5,883 on an hourly wage basis. Permanent employees accounted for the majority at 51.6%, while those on fixed-term contracts represented just 5.2%.
Public servants include employees from various government departments, the education sector, and security forces. The civil service encompasses staff from a wide range of ministries and services.
The education sector includes employees working in school departments, as well as staff at the Cyprus Productivity Center and the Cyprus Higher Institute of Hospitality Studies. The security forces consist of police officers, firefighters, and members of the National Guard.
In the education sector, there were 12,396 permanent employees, 996 on indefinite contracts, 4,150 on fixed-term contracts, and 144 hourly workers.
In the security sector, 8,328 were permanent employees, 4,479 on indefinite contracts, 294 on fixed-term contracts, and 751 on an hourly wage basis.
