Two Britons Attempt to Smuggle Nearly 200 Boxes of Cigarettes and 20 kg of Tobacco Out of Larnaca
A significant haul of tobacco products was seized at Larnaca Airport after two British nationals tried to smuggle nearly 200 boxes of cigarettes and 20 kilograms of tobacco off the island.
According to a statement from the police, the illegal tobacco products were found by Customs officers in the luggage of two passengers traveling back to the UK. One of the passengers had 124 boxes, each containing 200 cigarettes, as well as 11.4 kg of roll-your-own tobacco. The second passenger was carrying 73 boxes of 200 cigarettes and 9.7 kg of tobacco.
The products were not labeled with the required health warnings in Greek and Turkish, indicating they were duty-free items. Both the luggage and its contents were confiscated, and the passengers were arrested. The Larnaca District Court ordered them to be detained for four days.
One of the suspects was released on Sunday after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement and paying a fine of 10,000 euros.
