The European Committee of the Regions will convene an off-site meeting in Nicosia on 9 and 10 February 2026 at the proposal of the head of the Cypriot delegation, Eleni Loukaidou, which was unanimously supported, according to the Union of Cyprus Municipalities.
The meeting's theme is announced as "Preparedness and Resilience". Practical thematic discussions will be organized in cooperation with two Cypriot centres of excellence directly linked to municipalities: the CYENS Centre of Excellence in Nicosia and the Centre for Maritime and Shipping Research and Innovation (CMMI) in Larnaca.
At the opening ceremony, the 6th Annual Report of the European Union on the State of Regions and Cities for 2025 was presented. The report records how regions and cities perceive and respond to the climate and energy crisis, demographic transition, investment needs, future competitiveness issues, and preparedness for future crises.
The report also notes that housing provision in 2025 stands out as a growing concern of citizens and is considered a structural challenge affecting territorial cohesion, economic competitiveness, and the welfare of millions of European citizens.
