Due to the scorching heat in Cyprus, beer consumption has surged
The intense heat prevailing in Cyprus has led to a notable increase in beer consumption. Thanks to a significant uptick in local demand, beer consumption in May saw a rise of 9.4%.
According to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, a total of 4,682,575 liters of beer were consumed in the country during the last month of spring. In comparison, Cypriots consumed "only" 4,281,282 liters of beer in May of the previous year.
This substantial increase is primarily attributed to domestic consumption, with 4,475,044 liters of beer sold for the domestic market in May 2024. This marks a growth of over 13% compared to the previous year, when domestic beer consumption in Cyprus amounted to 3,951,318 liters.
It's worth noting that this surge in beer consumption coincided with the onset of high temperatures. In April 2024, beer sales in Cyprus were 26.8% lower than in May.
Experts suggest that if this trend persists, the summer of 2024 could witness record-breaking beer sales on the island.
However, beer exports to Cyprus have seen a significant decrease this year, totaling 207,531 liters in May, which is 37.1% less than during the same period the previous year.
The increase in domestic beer consumption may be linked to the rise in the number of tourists and the improvement in weather conditions, encouraging greater consumption of refreshing beverages.
