Commemorative Silver Coin Released in Cyprus for the 20th Anniversary of EU Accession
The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) has announced the release of a silver commemorative coin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cyprus's accession to the European Union. The coin, minted with a nominal value of 5 euros, is issued as a PRUF in 2024.
According to the regulator, a total of 2,000 coins will be minted, priced at 52 euros each. The coin symbolizes "Cyprus’s role as a force for creation and development within the EU," as depicted in the images of the EU flag and doves, which symbolize peace.
In addition, the CBC will also issue a 2-euro commemorative coin for circulation, with a total mintage of 7,000 coins. These coins will be presented in special cases and sold for 20 euros each.
The coin’s design includes an image of the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, as well as a stylized globe symbolizing Cyprus's geopolitical importance and its contribution to global peace and prosperity.
Both coins were designed by artist Georgios Stamatopoulos and minted by the Bank of Greece’s printing department.
The coins will be available for purchase by professional coin dealers and non-profit organizations through applications submitted between November 18 and 24, 2024.
Applicants will be notified of the results by November 29, 2024, with the CBC reserving the right to reject applications without explanation.
Public sales will begin on November 27, 2024, and will continue until December 20, 2024, depending on availability.
Purchases can be made directly at the CBC counters or through the online store. Buyers will initially be able to purchase up to two coins of each type, both in person and online.
If any stock remains after December 20, the purchase limits will be lifted, and from December 21, coins will be available for all interested buyers on a first-come, first-served basis.
