Cabinet approves revocation of citizenship for 28 individuals under the "Citizenship by Investment" program
At Thursday’s meeting, the cabinet approved six proposals to revoke Cypriot citizenship from 28 naturalized individuals who had acquired citizenship under the "Citizenship by Investment" program.
Earlier, on September 3, the cabinet sanctioned the revocation of citizenship for seven investors and 19 members of their families following a proposal from Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou. These decisions complement 35 previously adopted measures since March 2023, bringing the total number of citizenship revocations to 41.
According to the Ministry of Interior, a total of 150 individuals are affected: 41 investors and 109 family members. From 2021, when the program was closed, until now, citizenship revocation procedures have involved 360 individuals, of which 101 were investors and 259 were dependents. Of these cases, 112 have been completed with officially annulled documentation.
The government also authorized the issuance of decrees to revoke citizenship for 69 individuals whose cases arose between 2021–2023; the process has been completed for 15 people, including five investors and ten family members.
The state, together with the Law Office of the Republic, is finalizing amendments to the population registry legislation to align it with the recommendations of the European Commission and to eliminate the possibility of returning to previous practices. The Ministry notes that the measures aim to enhance transparency and restore Cyprus’s international reputation.
