Cypriots Consume an Average of 142.7 kg of Vegetables Per Year
To mark Green Monday, the Cyprus Statistical Service has released new data on the country’s vegetable consumption. On average, each Cypriot eats 142.7 kilograms of vegetables per year.
The annual per capita consumption includes:
- 25 kg of potatoes
- 18.2 kg of tomatoes
- 9.5 kg of cucumbers
- 6.9 kg of olives
- 4 kg of legumes
- 79.1 kg of other vegetables
The report also highlights that Cypriots consume more vegetables than the average EU citizen. Across Europe, the daily vegetable intake averages just 350 grams, which falls short of the minimum recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to Eurostat, only 12% of Europeans follow the “five servings of fruits and vegetables per day” guideline. Meanwhile, one-third of the population eats little to no vegetables, while 55% consume only one to four servings daily.
