Every Third Cypriot is Overweight
In anticipation of World Obesity Day, observed on March 4th, the Cyprus Dietetic Association has published a series of statistical data. Every third Cypriot is overweight.
According to the research, 36.1% of island residents aged 20 to 80 experience problems with excess weight. At the same time, 27.8% of Cypriots suffer from obesity, while 29.6% consider their weight to be normal.
Statistical data broken down by gender show that 46.9% of men and 26% of women are overweight, while 28.8% of men and 26.9% of women suffer from obesity. At the same time, 2.1% of men and 10.5% of women are underweight, and 22.2% of men and 36.6% of women consider their weight adequate.
The authors of the study note that a body mass index (BMI) above 25 is considered overweight, while over 30 is considered obese.
It is also noted that a national action plan to combat obesity is currently being discussed, targeting both adults and children. This plan aims to organize activities aimed at broader institutional and policy-level changes.
