The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has appointed a special envoy for religious freedom and the protection of minorities in the Middle East.

According to government spokesperson Konstantinos Letimbiotis, the role will be filled by Thessalia Salina Shambos. She will focus on safeguarding the rights of Christian and other minority groups through dialogue with countries in the region.

The primary aim of the special envoy will be to strengthen the rights of religious minorities and promote sustainable solutions to the challenges they face.

The envoy will also facilitate multilateral dialogue and interfaith meetings to encourage greater political participation from Christian minorities in the region. Special emphasis will be placed on projects related to healthcare, education, and the reintegration of victims.

“The appointment underscores Cyprus’s commitment to supporting religious communities in the Middle East, promoting regional stability, and highlighting the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region,” said the government spokesperson.
