Cyprus at Risk: Security Tightened Amid Iranian Threats
Cyprus is experiencing days of heightened tension following the escalation between Iran and Israel. Earlier, Iranian ballistic missiles launched at Israel were visible from the island.
Experts estimate that Cyprus is theoretically within range of Iranian medium-range missiles, including the Shahab-3. However, the probability of a direct strike is considered low due to layered US air defenses in the Gulf, Israel's missile defense systems, and the presence of the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In an extreme scenario, Cypriot authorities could deploy the Barak MX surface-to-air missile system. Increased activity has also been noted at British Sovereign Base Areas over the past 24 hours, with two RAF Airbus A400M transport aircraft arriving at RAF Akrotiri. London had previously deployed six F-35B stealth fighters and additional air defense systems to reinforce the Typhoons already stationed there.
Nicosia has been placed on high alert. The Ministry of Defence declared full mobilization readiness to counter potential missile threats or sabotage risks. Police have stepped up protection of critical infrastructure and US and Israeli sites, with embassies moving to enhanced security protocols.
