Cyprus is among the top ten countries for xenophobia levels. These data are provided in a report by the Field Studies Center of the University of Cyprus (UCFS).

This is the most important comparative study in Europe, conducted every two years, which records the existence of strong xenophobic sentiments in Cyprus, according to the survey results for 2022.

The study, compiled by Dr. Harris Psaltis in 31 countries, is based on several surveys on a range of topics related to immigration.

"Cyprus is faced with prevailing xenophobic sentiments and non-acceptance of immigration," the study says.

58% of respondents, to varying degrees, agreed to allow immigration of individuals of the same ethnic origin as the majority of the island's population. However, resistance was expressed when a similar question concerned individuals of different ethnic backgrounds or immigrants from economically disadvantaged and non-European countries.

It is also noted that 65% of respondents, to varying degrees, do not agree with immigration of individuals of different nationalities, and if the discussion involves people from poorer, non-European countries, this figure rises to 66%.

"Such a contrast in attitudes towards immigration of individuals of one and different ethnic groups underscores the presence of enduring xenophobic sentiments in Cyprus. It appears that Greek Cypriots significantly differ from the overall European sentiment, demonstrating a more negative attitude towards immigration than the European average," the study says.

The study also addresses public opinion regarding the positive or negative impact of immigration on the economy and cultural life in Cyprus as a whole.

In addition, the study also emphasizes the role of the state in developing a National Integration Plan for immigrants, which needs to be considered comprehensively within the framework of the immigration issue.
