Cyprus extradited an individual accused of embezzling compensation payments from the Chernobyl disaster aftermath to Russia
The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus have extradited Boris Sosin to Russia, who is accused of embezzling 2.5 million rubles in compensation payments from the consequences of the Chernobyl accident.
This was reported by TASS, citing the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Irina Volk.
"Russian citizen Boris Sosin was extradited from the Republic of Cyprus by employees of the National Central Bureau of Interpol of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia. He is accused of committing large-scale fraud," Irina Volk was quoted as saying.
According to the investigation, from February to August 2014, the man provided paid services to people in obtaining compensation for property lost as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
When assessing real estate objects to receive payments from the federal budget, he provided deliberately forged documents to the Department of Construction and Architecture of the Bryansk Region.
The total damage from the suspect's activities amounted to about 2.5 million rubles.
The representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs added that in 2017, preventive measures in the form of a travel ban and proper behavior were chosen against the Russian citizen. However, he violated the imposed restrictions and went into hiding. The suspect was first put on the federal wanted list, and then on the international one. In October 2022, Boris Sosin was detained on the territory of Cyprus at the request of the Russian side.
The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has given instructions for the extradition of the accused. At Larnaca Airport, the man was handed over to Russian law enforcement officers for transportation to Moscow.
