Cyprus has frozen the consideration of asylum applications from Syrian migrants
Cypriot authorities have suspended the process of considering asylum applications from Syrian migrants. This was announced by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on his social media page X.
"In connection with the recent mass arrival by sea of Syrian asylum seekers, as well as pending developments regarding the review of Syria's status, the consideration of asylum requests for all Syrian-origin individuals has been suspended," wrote the head of state.
It was previously reported that Cyprus is in a "state of crisis" due to the increasing number of migrants arriving on the island. The President of the country, Nikos Christodoulides, has already appealed to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to intervene in the situation.
Last Saturday, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, discussed with the leadership of Lebanon cooperation between the two states in effectively managing immigration.
The exact meaning of the "freeze" on the consideration of applications from Syrian migrants is not specified. It is also unknown whether Cyprus will continue to accept boats with migrants and whether they will continue to receive minimum living allowances.
It is worth reminding that another boat with refugees arrived in Cyprus over the past weekend.
