Cyprus ranks second in Europe in terms of mortality on urban roads
Cyprus has the second highest mortality rate on urban roads, with only Romania faring worse.
According to the 46th report of the Road Safety Performance Index (PIN), 62% of road deaths occur on urban roads in Cyprus. This figure significantly deviates from the overall European data. On average, road mortality on urban roads in Europe stands at 39%.
The report presents data on road safety across 27 EU member states, as well as Switzerland, Israel, Norway, Serbia, and the United Kingdom.
According to the published data, during the period from 2020 to 2022, more than half of road deaths in 25 EU member states occurred on rural roads (52%). 39% of fatal accidents happened in cities, and 9% on motorways.
In Cyprus, during the same period, 28% of fatal accidents occurred on rural roads, 62% on urban highways, and 9% on rural highways.
Thus, Cyprus has the lowest percentage of road traffic accidents on rural roads among PIN member countries. As for urban roads, Cyprus ranks second in terms of mortality percentage after Romania (63%).
The report also highlights a 25% reduction in mortality on rural roads across the EU from 2012 to 2022, which is higher than the 18% reduction on other roads. In Cyprus, the reduction in road mortality in rural areas was 47% compared to 17.6% on other roads.
