Cypriots Cite Inflation, Corruption, and the Cyprus Issue as Main Concerns
A recent survey by Cypronetwork has revealed that high inflation is the primary concern for Cypriots, with nearly two-thirds of the population expressing unease about rising prices.
The study, conducted in December 2024, involved face-to-face and telephone interviews with individuals aged 18 and older. A total of 911 people were surveyed, and the sample was representative of the population in terms of gender, age, and location.
According to the findings, inflation is not the only concern for island residents. The state of the country’s economy (45%), corruption (43%), and the ongoing Cyprus issue (42%) are also major worries for many.
Healthcare, immigration, education, and the environment ranked lower on the list of concerns.
Furthermore, over half of those surveyed expressed a lack of trust in Cyprus' government institutions. Approximately 59% of respondents said they don’t trust the government, 57% have little faith in the parliament, and 61% are distrustful of the judiciary. Political parties also received similar disapproval ratings.
Interestingly, the survey results mirror the findings of a recent Eurobarometer study on the same topics.
On a more positive note, a quarter of respondents stated that they fully trust the church, and 19% expressed confidence in the audit office.
When it comes to the Cyprus issue, 25% of those surveyed supported a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation as a solution, while 23% favored a single-state resolution. Around 14% backed the creation of two independent states, and 12% preferred maintaining the current status quo. Only 4% supported a confederation.
