Cypriot scientist awarded UNESCO international prize for cancer genetics research
Cyprus and the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) have received international recognition: Dr. Kyriakia Michailidou, head of the Biostatistics Department at the institute, was awarded the prestigious UNESCO-Al Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in STEM.
The award ceremony took place on September 19, 2025, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Dr. Michailidou was one of five young scientists from around the world to receive the award. She represented the Europe and North America region.
The prize is awarded to young researchers who have made significant contributions to the development of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Dr. Michailidou was recognized for her outstanding scientific achievements in biostatistics and genetic research, particularly her contributions to the study of breast cancer genetics. Her work contributes to a deeper understanding of disease causes as well as the development of methods for early diagnosis and personalized treatment.
The scientist actively applies statistical methods to analyze genetic data, developing models that help doctors and researchers make more informed decisions. Her approach combines cutting-edge technology with clinical practice, and her research results are recognized internationally.
In her speech at the ceremony, Dr. Michailidou emphasized that the award is not only a personal achievement but also a recognition of the importance of science for society. She thanked her team, colleagues, and mentors for their support and expressed hope that her success will inspire other young scientists.
The Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics noted that this award confirms the institute's high scientific level and its contribution to the advancement of medical science. The organization continues to actively develop research in neurology, genetics, molecular biology, and biostatistics, strengthening Cyprus's position on the international scientific stage.
