Cypriot and Greek directors sign the Manifesto of European Filmmakers

Film directors from Cyprus, together with their colleagues from Greece, announced an important achievement — the signing of the Manifesto of European Filmmakers, which establishes the principle of “cultural exception” as the foundation of European cultural policy.
The document was presented after a two-year campaign that began with the Filmmakers’ Declaration in Cannes in 2023. Its co-authors include Cyprus Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou and Greek Minister of Culture Dr. Lina Mendoni.
The manifesto asserts that European audiovisual art is not a commercial product but part of cultural heritage. It aims to protect the rights of authors, directors, and creators, as well as to support the industry financially in the face of technological pressures.
President of the Directors Guild of Cyprus Athina Xenidou stated: “Cinema is not technology — it is culture, collective memory, and art. We ensured that Europe’s voice is heard.”
The initiative received support from the Cyprus Film Office, Athens Film Office, Cyprus Film Commission, and Greek and European film centers.
