Cypriot Medics Discuss the Return of Mask Mandate Due to COVID-19
The number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in the Republic of Cyprus. Medical professionals are discussing the possibility of reintroducing a mask mandate in the country.
According to local media reports, Health Minister Popi Kanari sought the opinion of scientists on the current epidemiological situation at a scheduled meeting of the COVID-19 Scientific Monitoring Committee. It is expected that the decision to revoke the mask-wearing optional status in certain places might be reconsidered.
The primary consideration will be given to the reintroduction of masks in nursing homes, as the majority of COVID-19 hospitalizations involve elderly individuals. Additionally, there's a possibility of recommending mask usage in crowded places.
It is reported that the Ministry of Health is contemplating selective checks in shopping centers; however, such a possibility will be discussed after hearing all opinions and suggestions. If the decision is made to reinstate measures, the Ministry of Health will promptly prepare a decree for approval by the Council of Ministers.
It is noted that the epidemiological situation in Cyprus, like the rest of Europe, is gradually worsening. The Ministry of Health is studying data provided by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Actions taken by other countries will be assessed in the latter part of the day for comparison.
Recalling that Cyprus recorded 2,600 positive cases from December 21 to December 27, 2023. Currently, there are around 70 patients in the country's hospitals, with three in intensive care units, mainly elderly individuals aged 75 to 80.
In the coming days, medical professionals anticipate an increase in infections due to gatherings in homes and enclosed spaces during the holidays.
