Cypriot Koupe Set to Join PGI Register
A campaign has been launched in Cyprus to add the traditional Cypriot snack, Koupe, to the European Union's register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).
The Larnaca Chamber of Commerce (Evel) and the city’s tourism council have begun a collaborative research project aimed at securing PGI status for Koupe—bulgur pastries filled with minced meat.
The application will be based on studies conducted by Larnaca’s Deputy Mayor, Alexis Michailides, which focus on identifying the unique characteristics of this dish.
Once the research is completed, the official application process to the EU will commence, accompanied by promotional campaigns.
If Koupe is accepted into the PGI register, it will join an expanding list of Cypriot products that have been recognized in the registry over the past year.
