Cypriot prosecutors seek protection from the president
Prosecutors of the Republic of Cyprus have called on the government and the president to strengthen security measures following several attacks in recent weeks.
According to the Philenews newspaper, in a letter to the President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, dated January 19, which became known today, two attacks were mentioned: an explosion at the prosecutor's house in the Paphos village of Anavargos in December and the arson of the prosecutor's car in January. The statement also mentions that the prosecutor who was attacked in December "was fortunate to survive the explosion."
In response to these attacks, they called on the government to install surveillance systems, alarm systems, reliable fencing, and police protection in their homes.
It is reported that prosecutors from across the island held a meeting with senior officials of the legal service to express their concerns and suggestions. The legal service promised that this issue would be raised with the government.
The statement also mentions that prosecutors receive threats not only against their own lives but also against their families. Additionally, prosecutors called on the government to increase their salaries, as "the issue of salary increases is closely related" to their safety, and strengthening in both areas leads to the strengthening and independence of prosecutors, which is necessary for the administration of criminal justice.
"It is clear that the existing tariffs for prosecutors do not provide salaries and career prospects commensurate with their functions," the statement authors believe.
