Cyprus Cultural Heritage Committee Outlines Restoration Plans for 2025

The Cyprus Cultural Heritage Committee has announced an extensive schedule of restoration projects for 2025, targeting significant Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot heritage sites. The updates were shared in a statement by the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

Sotiris Ktoris, the co-chair representing the Greek Cypriot side, revealed that several restoration projects are already in progress, with new initiatives set to begin in the coming days. The 2025 agenda includes an even larger number of projects aimed at preserving and restoring cultural landmarks.

Current restoration efforts include work on Ayia Paraskevi in Famagusta, the second phase of the Apostle Andreas Church, Panagia Kanakaria, Panagia Chrysopolitissa in Kyrenia, Panagia Potamitissa in Kazafani, Tuzla Mosque in Larnaca, Avdimou Mosque, Ayios Georgios ton Latinon in Famagusta, and Timios Prodromos in Famagusta. Restoration at the Terra Mosque in Paphos is also ongoing.

In the coming days, restoration work will commence on Ayia Photini, Ayios Andronikos, Panagia of Lysi, and Tochni Mosque.

The 2025 schedule will include projects such as the mosques in Kilani and Ayios Thomas, Panagia Apsinthiotissa, Ayios Prokopios in Syngrasi, a traditional Cypriot house in Lini, the Diamante Bastion on the Venetian Walls of Famagusta, Panagia Makrasika, Panagia Akentou in Lefka, and Panagia Kryniotissa.

Additionally, preparatory studies are underway for 26 more monuments, ensuring future restoration efforts are well-planned.

Since its establishment, the committee has successfully completed restoration work on more than 160 cultural heritage sites belonging to both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
