Larnaca Recognized as “Green City of Cyprus — 2025”
The Municipality of Larnaca has been awarded the title of Green City of Cyprus 2025. The city authorities announced this on Friday.
The award was granted by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research & Education for the implementation of a project aimed at developing and strengthening the concept of “green beaches”.
Over the past nine years, more than 4,500 trees have been planted on Larnaca’s beaches, including about 1,500 in 2025 alone. Plant species suitable for coastal areas and the local climate were used.
The project is aimed at improving the microclimate, enhancing urban biodiversity, and improving quality of life, including in the Oroklini area. The initiative includes landscaping, environmental interventions, modernization of street lighting with a transition to LED technology, installation of photovoltaic systems, and expansion of waste recycling programs.
It is noted that the “Green City” or “Green Community of Cyprus” award is presented annually under the auspices of the Commissioner for the Environment and highlights the contribution of municipalities to sustainable development and environmental protection.
