Ersin Tatar, the leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and Nikos Christodoulides, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, have reached an agreement to launch new initiatives aimed at environmental protection and addressing climate change, following a meeting held in the buffer zone.

According to a statement from the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the two leaders met at the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia's buffer zone, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Colin Stewart. During the meeting, both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the reappointment of María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar as the UN Secretary-General’s personal representative for Cyprus, noting that they are looking forward to meeting with the Colombian diplomat in the near future.

Before the talks began, Ersin Tatar and Nikos Christodoulides jointly opened the first session of the newly established Youth Technical Committee at the Ledra Palace Hotel. They encouraged committee members to intensify dialogue and propose initiatives to tackle youth-related issues. After the meeting, the two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the progress made in the restoration of cemeteries and assigned the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage to continue these efforts.

In addition to environmental initiatives, the leaders discussed important issues such as demining, expanding solar energy infrastructure, and the potential opening of new crossing points. Specific joint actions on environmental matters have not been disclosed yet.
