Mother of Deceased 3-Month-Old Baby Detained at Larnaca Airport
The mother of a three-month-old baby who died in Cyprus has been detained at Larnaca Airport. The 21-year-old woman had flown to Greece a few days before the tragedy.
The baby passed away last week at a Nicosia hospital due to malnutrition and neglect. On July 28, the Nicosia City Hospital reported the infant's death to the police. Signs on the baby's body indicated that she had been kept in deplorable conditions.
Previously, the police arrested the baby's 23-year-old father, who faces charges of manslaughter and causing death by negligence. On July 30, the Nicosia District Court ordered his detention for eight days.
The autopsy revealed severe neglect of the baby's condition.
Initially, the father claimed that the mother had abandoned the child two days before the incident to look for work in Thessaloniki, Greece. However, the police later determined that she had left the home on the day of the baby's death.
On Saturday, the woman was arrested upon her arrival at Larnaca Airport. The Nicosia Court also ordered her detention for eight days on Sunday.
The police report that the family lived in a five-bedroom house rented to foreign workers. Additionally, the house was inadequately equipped for caring for newborns. The living conditions were deemed unsuitable not only for the baby but also for adults.
