Meteorological Service issues yellow warning for severe thunderstorms and cooling in Cyprus
The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms and a drop in temperatures in Cyprus during the final days of the year. According to the service, weather conditions will begin to deteriorate on the evening of December 30 and will persist until the afternoon of December 31.
Until the morning of December 30, mostly clear weather is expected, after which cloud cover will gradually increase. Isolated thunderstorms may occur from the west in the evening, and after midnight precipitation will spread across the entire island. These conditions are expected to last until the evening of December 31. On Tuesday night and Wednesday, snow or sleet is expected in mountainous areas, particularly in Troodos; hail is also possible during thunderstorms.
Until Tuesday evening, winds will be mainly southwesterly and initially variable, light to moderate (3–4 Beaufort). Overnight, winds will strengthen along the southern and southeastern coasts, later affecting the entire coastline; on Wednesday, strong to locally very strong winds (5–6 Beaufort) are forecast. Meteorologists note that an official yellow warning may be issued for coastal areas from Tuesday night through Wednesday daytime.
Temperatures will remain around the seasonal average: 15–16°C along the coast, dropping to around 4°C at night inland; in high mountain areas, nighttime temperatures will be around 0°C. Residents are advised to take the forecast into account when planning travel and outdoor activities.
