Ministry of Education reminds about the need to notify of student absences — and warns when the police will be called
The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth of Cyprus once again emphasizes the obligation of parents or guardians of primary school students — both in public and private schools — to inform the school in a timely manner about a child’s justified absence. This should be done either the day before or in the morning of the absence, even if it concerns only a few hours or a single day — in order to avoid undesirable situations, such as having to involve the police.
In an official statement published on Friday, it is clarified that with the beginning of the new school year, the school will provide parents or guardians with all necessary information about the means of communication — mobile or landline phone, email.
In cases where a child is absent without prior notification, the school first tries to contact the parents or guardians by phone or sends an SMS. If contact is not established, “at 8:45 a.m. on the same day the police will be called” for further action.
