Starting in the new academic year, mobile phones will no longer be allowed in middle and high schools in the Republic of Cyprus. This comprehensive ban on devices was announced on Wednesday by Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou.

In her statements following the Cabinet meeting, the minister stated that "as part of the significant changes initiated by the ministry," from the new school year, the activation and use of mobile phones will be prohibited in both middle and high schools.

"Of course, debates in Parliament on this issue will continue, as, according to statements from our other partners, there is no unanimous decision," the minister noted.

It is highlighted that the ban will apply both during instructional time and breaks. However, the use of "smart" devices will be permitted within the context of educational activities.

It is worth noting that this decision was first announced several months ago in an effort to curb crime among minors.
