Cyprus Records Unprecedented Electricity Demand Last Night
Due to the unusually cold temperatures, Cyprus experienced a record demand for electricity on Monday evening and overnight. The government has been advised to implement measures to prevent any adverse outcomes.
A representative from the Transmission System Operator (TSO) reported that electricity demand came close to its maximum, at times reaching 1,108 MW. To meet this demand, two units at the Vasiliko Power Station were running beyond their limits, as one unit is still under repair, and the sixth unit remains out of service. The demand on Monday evening surpassed the previous record from January 2022, when it peaked at 1,066 MW.
The demand is expected to remain at similar levels on Tuesday, or possibly decrease slightly. However, due to the weather conditions, renewable energy sources will not be in use. This time, no electricity was purchased from the northern part of the island, as the TRNC was struggling to meet its own demand. It's worth noting that last week, Cyprus had to request assistance from the Turkish Cypriots, with electricity being provided free of charge from north to south.
