Cyprus Health Ministry Issues Statement After First Confirmed Monkeypox Case

The Ministry of Health of Cyprus has released a statement following the country’s first confirmed case of monkeypox (Mpox). Health authorities have reassured the public that the risk of infection remains low.

According to the Ministry, and based on data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the overall risk of monkeypox infection for the general population is considered low.

Nevertheless, the public is urged to remain vigilant. The Ministry emphasized that self-protection measures and vaccination for high-risk groups are key to controlling the spread of the virus.

The first confirmed monkeypox case in two years was reported in Cyprus on Sunday, December 15. For context, five cases were recorded in 2022, while no cases were reported in 2023.

To minimize the risk of infection, the Ministry advises:

• Avoid physical contact with individuals showing symptoms of the disease,
• Wash hands frequently with soap or disinfectant,
• Follow personal protective measures,
• Maintain physical distancing,
• Seek vaccination if you belong to a high-risk group.
