Cyprus Ministry of Health Creates Director Position for GeSY Oversight and Gives "Green Light" to Rehabilitation Centers Bill
The Ministry of Health in Cyprus has created a new leadership position for the oversight body of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) and supported the advancement of the bill on rehabilitation centers. Statements were made by Minister of Health Michalis Damianos after a meeting of the Parliament’s Finance Committee.
According to the minister, since April 2025, the powers of supervision over GeSY have been transferred to the Ministry of Health, while patient complaint issues remain under the authority of the Commissioner for Patients’ Rights. A new A15 position has been created for the Head of the Oversight Service; applications for this position are currently being accepted. The service and staff have already been formed.
The new service will examine issues related to system functioning and the relationship between service providers and GeSY, including complaints and problems initiated by providers, which the Ministry of Health will investigate to ensure proper system operation.
Separately, the minister confirmed that the Ministry gives the "green light" for voting on the rehabilitation centers bill submitted in 2024. According to him, the discussed amendments are moving in the right direction and will allow the process to continue; further changes are possible through regulations or adjustments. The purpose of the bill is to keep under the Ministry’s oversight hospitals that provide services within GeSY, as well as to consider the possibility of including dependent institutions of the Vice-Ministry for Social Welfare where feasible. The minister warned that further delays would hinder the inclusion of new rehabilitation centers into the healthcare system.
