On Cyprus, August 15 is celebrated as the "Summer Easter"
In the Republic of Cyprus, August 15 is a nationwide holiday – the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary. Traditionally, "Summer Easter" is celebrated with open-air festivals, public festivities, and feasts.
The holiday is a public holiday – today is an official day off in Cyprus, and all government offices are closed.
In honor of the celebration, thousands of people have gone to churches and monasteries today, where solemn services are held to venerate the Virgin Mary. Solemn services are being held in all churches and temples dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Many communities are holding festivals and other celebratory events today, with musical concerts and dance performances.
It is also worth noting that, in anticipation of the holiday, the Cyprus police have increased security measures at all facilities, in places with large crowds, and at the country's major resorts. The number of patrols on major roads has been increased to prevent traffic accidents.
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an important holiday for the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches, marking the "falling asleep" of the Virgin Mary and her ascension to heaven.
